“Do not underestimate the impact of car seats. They may seem harmless, but prolonged use can lead to serious health risks,” warns Dominic Wyatt, a motoring expert from the International Drivers Association.
It’s alarming but true. In-depth research and studies reveal that extended use of car seats has direct links to several health issues, such as backache and lower back pain, cancer, and musculoskeletal disorders, amongst others.
The Silent Backache: More Than Just Uncomfortable
Any driver will tell you that spending too long in the driver’s seat can result in an aching back. But what causes this discomfort? Several factors contribute to backache and lower back pain, including postural stress, vibration, muscular effort, impact, and shock.
If ignored, these issues can escalate, affecting the back’s spine, muscles, nerves, and discs. Frequent sufferers may face chronic pain and possible disability. Wyatt affirms, “Car manufacturers must prioritize designing seats to reduce these risks. They’d not only make driving more comfortable but also significantly improve the well-being of drivers.”
A Carcinogenic Fog: The Unknown Threat
Unfortunately, the risk doesn’t stop at potential back and neck pain. Some car seats contain harmful substances. TDCIPP, a flame retardant chemical, is one such substance that is a known carcinogen.
New research reveals that the cushioning foam used in certain car seats contains high levels of a substance linked to cancer. Experts warn about the potential health risks associated with this discovery. The study’s results are published in the journal Environment International.
This exposure can increase the risk of cancer for people who spend a lot of time in the car. Alarmingly, TDCIPP can also affect the embryonic development and fertility of adults.
Strained Muscles: A Lingering Pain
The third health risk associated with the long-term use of car seats is the possibility of musculoskeletal disorders. Dominic Wyatt comments, “It’s not just the materials used to manufacture seats, but also their design that can cause serious medical conditions.”
Indeed, improper design of car seats and posture can result in neck pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, and leg cramps. These ailments can result from poor posture, lack of support, inadequate adjustment options, and prolonged sitting.
Worse, they can impair drivers’ and passengers’ function and quality of life. Wyatt advises, “Take regular breaks on long drives, stretch often, and change your seating position throughout your trip if possible.”
Prioritizing Safety
We can’t ignore the fact that the use of car seats is inevitable, but being aware of the dangers can help us limit the risks. Always remember to get out of your car and stretch to minimize the strain on your back and neck. Adjust your seat properly to maintain the right posture, and try to take breaks while driving for long hours.
Dominic Wyatt says, “Safe driving is not just about traffic rules; it’s also about taking care of your health.”
